For over a thousand years Kyoto was Japan's imperial capital, and the city still carries that gravity — 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines, and gardens that have been raked into perfection for centuries. Yet Kyoto is not a museum. It is a living city of craft: indigo dyers, woodblock printers, kaiseki chefs, and tea masters working in workshops their families have run for generations.
The city rewards a slower pace than most itineraries allow. Our travelers rise at dawn for Arashiyama's bamboo grove before the crowds, sit for a private tea ceremony in a machiya townhouse, and walk the Philosopher's Path in the rain, when the stones turn to mirrors.
Come in late November for koyo — the autumn leaf season — when maples frame Kiyomizu-dera's stage in flame orange and crimson. Or in early April, when the cherry blossoms drift along the Kamo River like slow snow.
